lake atitlan

lake atitlan is the deepest lake in central america and a feature of the guatemalan highlands. anchored by the town of panajachel, atitlan has a hundred or so very traditional mayan communities connected only by boat. there is no road that surrounds the lake. these images are from various points and towns around the lake in this great area of the country.


antigua, guatemala is a UNESCO world-hertiage site - a remarkably well-preserved spanish/mayan town in central guatemala dating back to the 1500's. a 7.7 magntiude earthquake destroyed 3,000 of the city's buildings in 1717 but the ruins still remain - the shell of a once great settlement.
